ERIC Chappell's Natural Causes is said to be the blackest of black comedies.
Find out if it matches that billing when Rowntree Players mount a production at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, from February 28 to March 2.
When Chappell heard the Players were including Natural Causes in their 90th anniversary season, he sent a message congratulating the company on reaching that landmark, thanking them for inviting his play to their party and sending his best wishes for a successful production.
For Chappell's story of mistaken identities and humorous consequences, director Frank Higgins has assembled a cast of experienced hands and one newcomer, led by stalwart Jim Hammond. He plays the pivotal role of Vincent, the "professional suicide merchant", a part performed by George Cole in the 1992 premiere.
The setting is the home of Walter Bryce (Roy Powell) and his wife, Celia (Jill Pearson). Also present are Walter's secretary, Angie (Kate Newall), and the remarkable Mr Withers (new recruit Gary Haq).
Tickets for next week's 7.30pm performances will be available on the door or can be booked in advance at York Theatre Royal's box office, tel 01904 623568.
