YOUNG chess enthusiast Sheila Dines, 8, gets some top tips from the leading British women's player Harriet Hunt at the Junior Girls British Chess Championships at the Elmbank Hotel, Tadcaster Road, York.
Hunt, who is president of the British Women's Chess Association, was on hand to give some of the best young players in the country tuition at the event last Saturday.
There were 50 competitors in the girls championship which was being held in the north of England for the first time.
The various titles were won by Stephanie Hale (Under 8), Jessica Thilaganathan (Under 9), Katie Hale (Under 10), Eleanor Hayden (Under 11), Katie Nightingale (Under 12), Charlotte Wilcox and Collen Halpin (Under 14).
It was followed by the Women's Rapidplay Championship the following day with Karen Bradley taking the Under 16 title and Heather Long the women's event.
The highest performing young player from Yorkshire over the weekend was Katy Smawton, who received an engraved chess clock for her efforts.
