YOUR headline "Rail firm faces revamp threat" (February 13) only served to show the muddled thinking that takes place in the minds of the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) and Mr Byers.
Until recently I travelled regularly between York or Selby and London and Glasgow by GNER. I could compare GNER's service with other rail journeys to Birmingham and Manchester. There was no real comparison.
GNER have always striven to ensure their passengers receive the best possible service, a far cry from Virgin or Arriva who seem less interested in their passengers.
The campaign backed by the Evening Press for a 20-year extension to GNER's franchise was commendable. However, the SRA and one suspects Mr Byers in particular, are not capable of long-term planning.
One shudders at the thought of Arriva attempting to run the existing GNER franchise.
Mr Byers has shown his true colours once again. Does he see train operating companies as his own train set to be played with as and when it suits him? Perhaps Mr Byers should sample GNER services and those of Arriva, if only to make a valid judgement prior to meddling once again in what should be a national asset.
