A YORK man whose passion for brass has become a real family affair has just received a prestigious national award.
Brian Henderson, 49, who formed Ebor Brass Band 22 years ago, has been awarded a diploma of honour by the London-based Worshipful Company of Musicians for service to brass bandsmanship.
It was one of only five diplomas handed out throughout the country.
Five of Mr Henderson's six children play alongside him in Ebor Brass, whose members practise in Westfield Primary School, Acomb.
Mr Henderson, a probate executive with Selby solicitors Parker March, lives in Grange Lane, Acomb, where he teaches children to play brass instruments three nights a week.
On his two other "free" evenings he is involved in band practice.
He said: "I teach for the fun of it and it's nice to get some recognition. I've been teaching people to play brass instruments for 34 years, all on a voluntary basis."
Mr Henderson, who is a tuba player with Ebor Brass, used to play for the York Railway Institute Brass Band.
He said: "I started playing a baritone when I was 11 and I've been hooked ever since."
