WORK has begun on installing a 20mph zone in Tang Hall as part of City of York Council's Safer Routes to Schools initiative.
The project, which includes traffic-calming measures in Fifth Avenue, Penyghent Avenue and Ennerdale Avenue, started this week and work is expected to take two weeks to complete.
Although most of the works are being done under stop/go board traffic control, a road closure will be needed tomorrow to enable work to be carried out within the Fifth Avenue, Penyghent Avenue and Gillamoor Avenue junction.
During the closure local diversions will be signed.
Ray Chaplin, head of engineering consultancy, said: "This important work is being done to increase the safety of local school children and residents.
"We would ask people to bear with us during this period."
But it has been opposed by some local residents.
Frank Kelly, who lives in Malham Grove, said: "There is a case for traffic-calming measures on through roads near schools, but to install them in quiet, short cul-de-sacs, to the complete disregard of the residents' need for access and with no improvement in safety, is a cavalier waste of our money."
