THE busy hustle and bustle of haggling and bagging a bargain at one of York's market stalls has long been a feature of city centre street life.
Today's selection of photos for Yesterday Once More in Pictures shows the changing face of market life over the last century.
The picture above shows shoppers mingling among the rows of stalls in a busy Newgate Market in 1964.
At the start of the last century, market stalls used to be laid out in St Sampson's Square, as shown in our photograph, below, taken in 1907. This shows the area reserved for country farmers at the "Basket Market".
In the 1950s work began to provide traders with permanent stalls in their current home at Newgate Market, behind Shambles.
The next two pictures , from 1955, show men at work on the new stalls.
In more recent times, Newgate traders have called for a return to Parliament Street, where new specialist markets like the Continental and Farmers' Markets, have attracted many visitors.
Traders have urged city councillors to promote their seven-day market more effectively.
