MOTORISTS faced treacherous road conditions on their way to work today, but City of York Council insisted all its allocated routes WERE gritted.
A council spokeswoman said all the council gritters had been out last night at 10pm and they had gritted all the roads laid down in the council's gritting policy.
These roads had been publicised in a leaflet delivered to all homes in the autumn, she said.
She said because last night's freeze had involved frost, and not ice caused by standing water, the grit would not have started working until traffic started passing over it.
The grit would become more effective the more vehicles were driving over it, she said.
North Yorkshire Police said there had been several minor bumps across the county caused by black ice, but no one had been seriously injured.
