PICKERING snooker professional Paul Davison scored a superb victory in the Embassy World Championship yesterday, beating Scot Hugh Abernethy 10-6 in the second qualifying round in Telford, writes Hugh MacDougall.
Tomorrow he takes on Sheffield's Antony Bolsover, who lost in the first round of the UK Championship in York in December.
Davison, who represents Filey Snooker Club, took a 4-0 lead against Abernethy, who lost to Ryan Day in the Benson and Hedges tournament final last autumn. Two of those frames, including the fourth with a 50 break, he won on the black.
The Pickering player led 6-3 at the end of the first session and 7-6 at the start of the third and final session. Breaks of 68, 60 and 81 gave him the next three frames for victory.
"I am really pleased with the way I played," he said today. "I would settle for being 6-3 up against anyone, let alone a player as good as Abernethy. The last time I played Bolsover he beat me on black in the deciding frame, but our matches have been fairly even."
