The floods that threatened to deluge the centre of York yesterday put paid to virtually all weekend river match action.
The hardy, some might say foolish, souls contesting the 43-peg Bob. Co match elected to fish the Ouse at Thorpe Underwood despite it carrying over eight feet of flood water.
With the river bursting its banks opposite and Sammy the Seal still in residence, fish were at a premium.
Bob Foster (Wibsey) was one of two anglers to break two pounds, but only just. Drawn on peg two in the top field at Thorpe Underwood he legered lob worm for three unseasonal eels and a solitary roach scaling 2lb 8dr. Close behind was Tony Hewson (Armley Angling). He had a dozen small roach on a ground bait feeder and maggot from peg 43 for a level 2lb.
Others: Rob Stubbs (Yarm) 1-14-0; Tony Webster (Hirst Tackle) 1-11-8.
At Carpvale it was the day's only carp bag that took top spot ahead of a chasing pack of silver fish anglers.
Andy Gallant (Armley Angling) won with a straight 21lb. Going for quality rather than quantity he pole-fished corn tight to the distant island opposite peg 53. His winning bag contained just four carp.
The rest targeted roach with Trevor Jackson (Leeds) having the most with 11lb 1oz from peg 5.
Others: Alan Scott (Leeds) 10-8-0; Derek Barker (Acomb Tackle) 10-4-0
It was a similar story at Raker, Wheldrake where 30 fished another sell-out on Horseshoe Lake.
Gareth Sellars (Team Gem) led with 37lb 7oz from form peg 21. Fishing tight across with floating pole at 18 metres he baited with double red maggot and corn for his net of carp to 3lb.
Organiser Paul Kozyra (Anglers Corner) took second with 13lb 5oz of roach and skimmers on maggot over casters from peg 18.
Others: Rick Johnson (Leeds) 12-14-0; Luke Hardy (Leeds) 12-7-0.
A field of 61 were battered by the wind and rain at the Oaks, where Andy Hampson (Hirst Tackle) took advantage of the relative shelter afforded by peg 1 to win with 42-14-0.
Fishing pole and maggot down the nearside he netted carp to 3lb.
Dave Alman (New Phoenix) was on form peg 22, where he switched lines between 12 and nine metres to keep the small carp coming to his maggots.
His 30-4-0 was well clear of third Gary Pawlett (Oaks) who had 19-14-0 from peg 55.
Others: Ernie Rawson (Bratton) 16-9-0; Rob Minikin (Oaks) 16-1-0; Rob Morgan (Cleveland Angling Centre) 14-10-0.
Round 3 at Woodlands drew another entry of 66. Corner pegs dominated with Phil Noble (Stokesley) posting the day's best score from Dragonfly 10.
Fishing pole and corn at 16 metres to the corner of the island he netted 59 carp for 75-8-0.
Roger Holmes (MAP Elton) also took advantage of an island corner at Swallow 8, where he pole-fished corn at 15 metres for 62-7-0 of carp to 7lb plus barbel and tench.
Others: John McGarill (MAP Elton) 45-12-0; Stuart Newberry (Elton Tackle) 27-3-0; Geoff Leech (Matlock) 27-2-0; Mark O'Neill (Drop AC) 27-1-0.
Teams: Keenets Elton 14; Goolies 18; Age Concern 25.
League: Goolies 3; Keenets Elton 6; Stokesley and Odd Balls both 12.
