A NATIONAL Park planning boss says RAF Fylingdales failed to notify the authority about a series of extra security measures to be introduced.

Coun Philip Shaw, chairman of the North York Moors National Park planning authority, said they had yet to see a retrospective planning application for the measures, introduced in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks on America.

Coun Shaw said: "I was not aware of this until now. It would be fairly usual for planning officers to have had discussion before the paperwork goes in, but I have not seen a retrospective application at this stage."

The extra measures include increasing the height of existing fences and adding a new inner layer of razor wire.

New police posts have been added and extra approach roads to the site, which is in the centre of the National Park, have been ordered.

Defence Minister Lewis Moonie has now suspended work on the improvements while an application for retrospective planning permission is considered.

Coun Shaw said he would await the application with interest.

Keith Mollison, spokesman for Fylingdales Action Network, said they were very concerned about the extra security measures introduced. He said concerns over the environmental impact had also been raised.
