Q I am going on holiday abroad and wondered if there were any essential oils that I could take with me to help combat the usual travel problems such as jet lag and swollen ankles?
A There are many oils that can help you to have an easier journey and a more relaxed holiday. Firstly, good old Lavender oil. This is a very versatile oil. If you suffer from flight nerves, put a few drops on to a tissue and inhale it. It has calming properties that will help to relax you. It also has anti viral properties, so inhaling it on the aeroplane should help to protect you against germs that are so prevalent in air conditioned places.
For headaches, massage one drop into the temples. This is one of the few oils that can be used neat on the body. I must stress, however, that it should only be used in very low dilutions i.e. one or two drops at the most. Insects and other little things that bite have an aversion to the smell of this oil so massaging a hand/body lotion containing Lavender around arms legs and other exposed areas before you go out at night, should help to protect you.
Peppermint is another good all-round essential oil. It has cooling anti-inflamma-tory properties, so is ideal to use during the flight. Massage into the back of the neck to help to revive the body and dispel tiredness. Massage into swollen feet to help cool and soothe them. It is also excellent to use after sunbathing, especially if you have stayed out too long, as it will help to cool the body down. You can also use it for mild cases of indigestion or overindulgence the night before (rub clockwise around abdomen). This is quite powerful essential oil however, and should only be used in low dilutions and never neat. Always dilute before use in carrier oil.
Lastly, essential oil of Tea Tree is natural antiseptic antiviral oil. Diluted in a carrier oil or lotion you can massage it into hands and feet to help protect the body against harmful germs.
Caution; if you are pregnant or have a medical condition i.e. epilepsy or heart problems, please consult a professional aromatherapist before you use essential oils.
