AS the local reporter for Country Music Roundup magazine I am dismayed by the low attendances at one of our most cosmopolitan venues. For musical entertainment Fibbers, on York's Stonebow, is the only one providing music of all genres from every corner of the world. I have lost count of the times I have turned up to see a country music artist who has often journeyed thousands of miles to entertain, only to find country music lovers in this area can't be bothered to turn up and support them.
Many of the acts are up-and-coming stars and the intimacy of Fibbers offers a golden opportunity to listen to their music and to chat with them.
When these people become stars it is almost impossible to get anywhere near them, let alone strike up a conversation. Some of these 'unknowns' are songwriters who have written for people such as Nanci Griffith, Joan Baez, Garth Brooks and it is always interesting to hear how the song was originally performed.
During the next few months there are various country music singers appearing at Fibbers. Not all are well known but many soon will be. Don't miss 'em.
