RECORD numbers of people in Yorkshire and Humberside signed up for vocational courses in the New Year - indicating fear and uncertainty in the workplace.
The latest figures show that almost ten times as many people from Yorkshire and Humberside enrolled for employment-enhancing courses during the first two weeks of January as in the same period last year.
The growth rate is one of the highest in the country.
Learndirect, the UK's largest publicity-funded e-learning network, believes that the figures indicate that fear and uncertainty in the workplace is fuelling a re-skilling revolution.
Registration statistics show that 58 per cent of learners are enrolling on Learndirect courses relevant to their current jobs.
In January, this rush of registrations focused on information and communication technology, recognising its growing importance in all sectors of industry. Learndirect spokeswoman Helen Milner said: "Employers always look to recruit and retain the most skilled staff, whatever the state of the economy.
"Developing yourself through learning is the best way not only to safeguard your job and to be prepared for any demand that it might throw at you, but also to open up other job opportunities to advance your career ambitions."
