LIAM Cahill, of York and District Indoor Bowls Club, beat Selby's Matthew Mansell 9-4 in the final of the Yorkshire Under-18s invitation singles competition played at Thornaby.

English Indoor Bowling Association past president and current Yorkshire secretary Tony Horobin has invited both players to play for Yorkshire 'A' team and to represent the county in the national finals.

York indoor club were also represented at the Yorkshire Under-18s invitation singles competition by Philip Scott, who lost in the semi-finals, and Josh Cahill, Philip Herridge and Adam Tattersall, who were narrowly beaten at the group stage.

New Earswick indoor club duo Stephen Long and Robert Domville were beaten in the quarter-finals, while Alistair Domville lost in the first round of the knockout stage.

The New Earswick trio had earlier won the Scarborough Youth Triples Tournament.

In tough group matches, Long, at skip, drew a winner with the last wood for New Earswick to beat Thornaby 'B', and drew two on the last end for New Earswick to beat Ryedale 'A' by one shot.

New Earswick then beat a strong York side by nine shots.

In the semi-finals New Earswick beat Hornsea and then in the final the New Earswick trio were on top form to beat Thornaby 'A' and win the trophy.

Those wanting to introduce their children or grandchildren to indoor bowls can receive coaching from both the York clubs.
