I AGREE with the National Farmers' Union, inadequate border controls were the primary cause of the foot and mouth epidemic (January 21).
A fraction of the vast sum spent on eradication would have stopped the virus. If diseases are kept out they cannot spread.
An inevitable consequence of foot and mouth is more rules for farmers to obey. I can accept this, but only if border controls are drastically strengthened and rigorously enforced otherwise farming animals will be not worth the risk.
