RAILWAY Institute Monday/Wednesday Club won the battle of the Queen Street clubs with a 9-0 win over their Tuesday/Thursday club mates in York Badminton League men's division one.
John Main and Tim Vickers were great form for the winners with three straight wins for 90-21. Mike Corley and Matthew Hitchins were the pick of the Tuesday/Thursday pairings.
Huntington edged a 5-4 win over Selby 77 in men's division two. Paul Moisley and Ian Macauley were the Huntington match winners with three wins for 99-61 including the match winning ninth, where they beat John Hardy and Chris Shipley 15-0, 17-15.
Selby Jubilee scored a tremendous 6-3 away win over Knavesmire and consolidated their second place in the division. Three wins from Roy Cannon and Andy Hatfield swung the match in Jubilee's favour. Their ales total of 97-56 including a 15-112, 7-15, 15-9 over Dave Brogden and Andy Limbert who took two Knavesmire wins.
York University Staff Club used home advantage to score a 7-2 win over Pocklington in men's division three. Paul Scott and Simon Fletcher put together a great series with three wins for 90-31. Barry Johnson and Tom Rastall took both Pocklington wins, but lost out 8-7 to Scott and Fletcher.
Two days earlier York University Staff Club had entertained RI Tuesday/Thursday 'B' and lost out 6-3 at the Campus Sports Centre. Barry Woodward and Ho Wong led the Institute charge with three wins for 113-89, while Paul Waites and Garry Turner responded for the Staff Club with two successes.
Fulfordgate lost out 6-3 at home to Clifton 'B'. The best display of the match came from Fulfordgate's Gary Hall and Matthew Hobman who took all three home wins, including an exciting 13-15, 17-16, 15-13 over Stuart Robertson and Mark Screeton.
Knavesmire 'A' pulled off a shock 5-4 away win over RI Tuesday/Thursday 'A' in mixed division two, despite being down to only two couples. Joy Wilson and Dave Brogden steered Knavesmire home with three wins for 99-49. Marlene Woodward and Ian Sinker took the Institute consolation with a 4 and over Bev Thorpe and Andy Limbert.
York RI 'B' continued their domination with an 8-1 home win over Sheriff Hutton. Stuart Fieldhouse and Karen Wedgwood topscored with three straight wins for 90-36, whilst Jo Wade and Chris Schofield responded for Sheriff with 12-15, 15-10, 15-12 over Tim Russ and Carol Howes.
Pocklington 'A' increased their lead in mixed division three with an 8-1 away win over Rowntree 'C'. Chris Kunkel and Sally Howat played well to record 90-35 from three straight wins, and Phil Pearce and Lynn Lyan took the confectionery consolation with a 15-8, 14-17, 15-9 over Barry Johnson and Sue Percival.
Bill Marley and Catherine Topping were in great form for Tadcaster 86 as their side beat Pocklington 'B' 7-2 in mixed division four. Marley and Topping recorded 90-25 from three straight wins, including an 8 and 3 over Kevin Chidlow and Lynn Sagar. Chidlow and Sagar took both Pocklington wins in a solid display.
York University Staff Club 'A' grabbed top spot with a 7-2 hard fought win over Drax 'D'. Rachel Adamson and Andy Brown took the games only maximum to return 95-49. A Boyes and D McKechnie took both Drax wins, but lost out 15-5, 13-15, 1-15 to Brown and Adamson.
* Olympic bronze medalist Simon Archer has found himself in the international wilderness after he was dropped for the Thomas Cup World Team Championships in Eindhoven.
Archer, who teamed up with Jo Goode for success in Sydney, was excluded after doubts over his fitness following a knee operation.
