THE well-deserved knighthood awarded to Professor Ron Cooke in the New Year Honours shows in what high regard the University of York is held nationally.

We are very lucky to have such a good university here because it enriches our lives in so many ways, especially for those lucky enough to live in Heslington.

The success of York in the future is linked very closely to the success of the university, other higher educational establishments, our wonderful schools and developments in the biosciences.

This is the area where growth will take place and wealth will be created, and we must provide it with room to grow and develop even if it means encroaching on to land at present being farmed.

The organisation called Protect would be better employed protecting the tender shoots from the seeds planted so recently by the founding fathers of the university, nurtured so well by Professor Ron Cooke, and now with the potential to become one of our great universities.
