FORMER St Peter's School pupils Mark Spilman and Richard Pike will be hoping to earn their places in the Yorkshire Under 20s squad for the County Championships.

But first the school chums will have to line-up against each other tomorrow afternoon.

Spilman has been named as part of a 27-strong White Rose squad for the trial game against Durham University at Otley (kick-off 2.15pm).

And while Spilman, who now attends Liverpool University, is already in the squad, Pike will be looking to force his way into it by impressing the selectors when he turns out for Durham.

The Yorkshire U20s team secretary confirmed: "There are about two or three boys from the Durham team who could be included in the county side.

"Richard Pike is one of the ones who could come into the equation."

The pair, who helped St Peter's School to the Yorkshire Cup at U15s level, have worked their way up the ranks together and will be hoping to continue their development in the County Championships.

Spilman will want to make the No10 jersey his own for when the Championships kick-off against Cumbria on February 3, while Pike, who was once named the schools' player of the month by Rugby World magazine, faces strong competition for a place in the back row.

The Yorkshire squad also includes two Harrogate youngsters - with Andrew Boyle and Michael Lewis keen to play their rolls in the matches.

Lewis, who is a student at Loughborough University, can play in the second row or on the back row as can Boyle, who now plies his trade at Otley alongside his brother Matthew.

Boyle will have the added incentive to do well for his county as his brother was part of the U20s County Championship winning team two years ago.
