TWO York policemen who joined the force together 23 years ago were today being recognised for their loyal service and dedication to the job.
Constable Colin Brown and Sergeant Michael Thompson, who both work from Clifton Moor Police Station, were among eight North Yorkshire Police officers due to receive the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal from Chief Constable David Kenworthy at force headquarters in Northallerton today.
Sergeant Thompson, 47, who has worked all over the area covered by the force in different aspects of the job, has already been commended for bravery after he risked his life in two separate incidents.
Last year, he and a colleague tackled a man with a knife and Sgt Thompson once tried, unsuccessfully as it turned out, to pull a woman from a blazing car seconds before it blew up.
Although those are the incidents that stick in his mind, he said the variety of the day-to-day job is challenging enough, and he hopes to be promoted to inspector in the future.
He said: "I like to experience different aspects of police work and I've covered quite a number in my 23 years."
PC Brown, 49, said he never dreamed he would complete 23 years in the force.
He said: "I remember going to training school and thinking to myself 'I'm not quite sure if I'll like this job, but I'll see it through.'
"I've spent the whole 23 years in the York area.
"it's one of the busiest areas within the force.
"I like the variety of the work."
Other officers to receive the long service award include Sgt Michael Boothroyd, of Harrogate CID, PC Stephen Mosey, of Harrogate, and PC Stephen Bastable and PC Richard Raine, both of Scarborough.
Section Officer Susan Ryder, of Selby, was due to receive a
special constabulary long service medal.
Acting Sgt Peter Wood, of Scarborough, was due to receive a Chief Constable's Commendation.
