A GROUP of York teenagers have taken a year out of their studies to work with youngsters in their local community.
The four-strong team, from the Gateway Christian Centre, in Front Street, Acomb, took up the challenge after finishing their A-levels at York College.
Their tasks include, helping with a mums and toddlers group, giving assemblies at local schools and running a youth club.
The group, consisting of, Rich Martin, 18, Pete Gardner, 19, Erin Chandler, 18, and Emma Hannigen, 19, who all live in Acomb, survive on an allowance from the church.
Church leader Dave Shore, who is supervising and training the group, said: "The youngsters we work with can relate to the group as they are nearer the same age - I'm a bit of a fossil!
"The year is exhilarating for them.
"They're always nervous before trying something new, but when it works they are chuffed to bits.
"It's a great opportunity that will set them up for life."
He added: "We don't teach them to go out preaching at people, but to learn to listen and answer questions about Christianity when asked."
Pete Gardner said: "The course is superb. It has been great to give something back to the Acomb community as I've taken so much over the years."
