DUE to adverse weather conditions, the deadline for lifting sugar beet from land to be entered as set-aside has been extended from January 15 to February 28. The extension applies for this year only and is for sugar and fodder beet.
Meanwhile, DEFRA is launching a consultation period inviting interested organisations to give their views on the environmental impact of growing sugar beet on the land on which it is grown.
This is in response to a request from the EU. Consultation documents are on the DEFRA website at(http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/current.htm).
