THE Gimcrack Hotel in York is threatened with demolition to make way for 19 houses.
Built when few had the means to travel into the city centre for their entertainment, the Gimcrack may now be less profitable. Nevertheless, it would be a great shame to see both the building and grounds disappear.
After the demise of the Frog Hall, this shows how developers are scouring York for every square foot of potential housing land.
The city must be on its guard against the sort of over-development that would damage our special quality of life.
