A DRAMATIC wonder try by scrum-half Johnny Waldron gave York Acorn a GMB BARLA National Cup first round win at Cumbrians Glasson Rangers.
The teenager blazed on a 70-yard run to score the winning touchdown five minutes into 'golden score' over-time after the teams had been level at the end of full-time and extra-time.
The try secured a hard-fought 16-12 win and brought to an end an epic cup tie.
In a defence-dominated first half, chances were of a premium and the half-time score of 2-0 to Acorn was indicative of the efforts of both defences, the only points coming from an 18th-minute penalty from loose-forward Lee Frank.
However, Glasson scored a brace of unconverted tries on 48 and 51 minutes via second-rower Barrie Goodfellow and centre Greg Rowley, and the next points were to prove vital.
Fortunately for Acorn, their prop-forward Paul Dodsworth stormed over from nearly 40 yards out on 58 minutes and Frank brought them level seven minutes later with a penalty goal.
With two minutes remaining, Frank kicked his third goal of the game but within a minute Glasson were back on level terms thanks to a penalty by stand-off Stephen Maguire.
The game went into extra-time of ten minutes each way, and with last kick of the first period Maguire slotted over a penalty to put the hosts 12-10 ahead.
However, with two minutes from the end when Frank tied the scores with his fourth goal.
The referee blew at the end of extra-time and, to Acorn's amazement the home supporters, officials and referee began to leave the pitch believing Glasson had won the tie by virtue of having scored two tries to Acorn's one.
However, after being shown the rules by animated Acorn secretary Julian Smith, the referee, along with the Glasson contingent returned to the pitch for the final instalment of what was an epic cup clash.
