North Yorkshire's Simon Dyson suffered major second round blues in the Bell's South African Open in Durban.
After a storming start in which the 23-year-old Malton and Norton Golf Club ace fired a first round five-under-par 67, Dyson's hopes were pegged back by a one-over round of 73.
He suffered a poor inward nine to knock him back among a group of eight players on a four-under half-way total of 140.
Out in front on 133 was South African James Kingston. He headed the local challenge after pre-tournament favourite Ernie Els blew his chance to get back in contention.
Kingston picked up five birdies in 11 holes to move to the top of the leaderboard, nine shots clear of Els.
Els, winner of the event the last time it was held at the Durban Country Club in 1998, struggled to a one-over-par 73. He had also started the day nine shots behind first round leader Carl Pettersson.
The world number five had begun the week in optimistic mood, talking of his desire to win more major titles after a disappointing 2001 season.
