THE women who served in Britain's wartime air services are being commemorated at the Yorkshire Air Museum.
The Elvington-based museum has put up a memorial to those women who served with, among others, the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Naval Air Service, Royal Air Force, Air Transport Auxiliary and Royal Observer Corps. The memorial is made from a propeller from a Wellington bomber that crashed in the sea off the Yorkshire coast during the Second World War. A plaque will be placed at its base for a commemoration service on June 12. An Evening Press campaign is backing the efforts of two North Yorkshire women and a York-based army officer to get the women's war effort recognised.
Museum director Ian Reed said: "We hope that this memorial will complement the Evening Press campaign by drawing together all those who participated in the service of their country's air force."
