THE Government has introduced a new rate relief scheme to help farmers diversify into non-agricultural activities.
There will be 50pc mandatory rate relief for land and buildings with a rateable value of £6,000 or less that are used for non-agricultural purposes, which had previously been agricultural land and buildings.
Councils have discretion to increase relief to 100pc where they feel the change of use will benefit the wider community. Relief will initially be limited to a maximum of five years.
