PREPARATIONS for this year's Great Yorkshire Show are well under way as farmers across the region try to leave behind the troubles of 2001.

The 144th show runs from July 9-11 at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate.

"We're looking forward to an excellent show," said show director Christopher Hall.

"With the traumas of last year receding, we are determined to ensure the 2002 show is a focus for enjoyment and re-vitalisation of the farming industry.

"We are very hopeful that the livestock classes will run as usual.

"The cancellation of so many events has made us all realise the value of getting out and meeting people, whether it's friends, family, customers or suppliers.

"The Great Yorkshire Show has always been a social occasion as well as an important date on the farming calendar so this year's event will be particularly special."

For the first time in 40 years a cheese show will be included, with 21 classes for English varieties, organised in conjunction with Wensleydale Creameries of Hawes.

Elsewhere on the showground there will be the popular Shetland Pony Grand National, the White Helmets Motorcycle Display Team, a sheepdog display, the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment and show jumping.
