PREGNANT women should avoid close contact with sheep during lambing periods, advised the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. They may risk their own health or that of their unborn child as the result of infections that can occur in some ewes.
Reports of these infections and human miscarriages that can result are small, but the advice is to: not help to lamb or milk ewes; avoid contact with aborted or new-born lambs of the afterbirth; avoid handling clothing or boots that may have come in contact with lambs or ewes.
