AN INTREPID York pensioner is to trek across 100 miles of scorching African desert to raise money for people with learning disabilities.
Aileen Chapplow, 64, of Middlethorpe Grove, Dringhouses, is tackling the eight-day hike in Namibia with her son Mike and his wife Veronique, in aid of the charity Mencap.
Aileen, who was a teacher at Dringhouses Primary School for 25 years, has previously walked the lower slopes of the Himalayas up to 14,000 feet.
She said: "I've got great determination to see this through.
"I've been out walking every other day to keep fit. It's going to be extremely hot.
"I'm really looking forward to it."
Aileen's husband, Derek, said: "I'm very proud of her for doing this.
"She is a very resolute woman and does not give up very easily."
