IN response to recent letters about the New Walk, I have contacted the council and can provide the following information.
Regarding the sculptures that had been intended to adorn the New Walk, the council states that, rather than a requirement, they were a "discretionary" element of the improvements made last year. Because funds were required elsewhere, the Millennium Bridge Trust cancelled this item and paid the artists for their ideas and presentations. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge as yet of how these reallocated funds have been spent.
The council also believes that the levels of maintenance along the New Walk are generally acceptable.
They told me that no maintenance contract was drawn up between themselves and the Millennium Bridge Trust, and that the upkeep will remain much the same as it was before the improvements.
These and other issues are being discussed between the council and The Friends of New Walk, with the objective that we will hopefully see improvements made to the care of New Walk which reflects its new status and level of use.
The friends produce a newsletter outlining their projects and concerns. To receive a newsletter, or become a member of the Friends of New Walk, please leave your details on 01904 674587.
The more members we have the more influence we have to generate change.
Christopher Baily,
Secretary, Friends of New Walk,
