YORKIE the Lion, York City's mascot, has roared a passionate rallying call to supporters to attend tonight's crucial fans' meeting.

Speaking ahead of the crunch public debate at Tempest Anderson Hall, Yorkie believes fans must show a united front and guard against apathy.

"Ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your club," said the City cheerleader, who also urged fans to turn out in force at all City's upcoming games.

He added: "I appeal to fans of City to attend tonight's meeting and also Saturday's home game with Torquay.

"And I would also appeal to the public of York and those fans who went to Wembley, the games at Manchester United and Everton and Liverpool in the 1980s who have maybe now switched their affections to other clubs."

It is hoped tonight's meeting will establish a Save City Committee with the aim of setting up a Supporters' Trust.

However, Yorkie insisted it was still important for fans to prove to any would-be investors the strength of feeling for the club.

"Whether a Supporters' Trust is established or not, fans will have a fundamental role to play in the future of the club," said Yorkie.

"If you are going to come to a game try and bring a friend or work colleague along. We need to show potential buyers or companies who may wish to get involved the club is worth saving."

The meeting starts at 7.30pm. Entry to the 300 capacity hall is on a first come first served basis.
