YORK Wasps skipper Peter Edwards believes a win against Oldham Roughyeds tomorrow will open the floodgates to bigger things for the club.
Despite heavy defeats against Whitehaven Warriors and Barrow Border Raiders, the former Kiwi international feels the narrow loss against Batley Bulldogs showed the Wasps are on the right path.
"We should've gone on and won that (the game against Batley), but things are looking good here," he told the Evening Press. "There are some good lads down at the club at the moment and everyone is working hard to get things right.
"There is talk of more players coming in, so everyone really has to perform to keep their place.
"That even includes me as skipper - you are only as good as your last game, so I have to keep on putting in the performances.
"A victory would really boost us, especially as it is away. Once that victory comes, that will be it for us - more will follow. But we need to get that first win under our belts."
With Oldham going through a turbulent patch, Edwards admits York may not get a better chance to take on the defeated NFP Play-off finalists.
"It is a good time to play them," he said. "They have not had the best of starts, losing their first two games and their coach, but a lot will depend on the day.
"We will still have to go out there and perform."
Edwards, who has had previous spells in the British game with Salford City Reds and Doncaster Dragons, has played Oldham "many, many times" in the past but he admits he knows little about them this season.
"I don't know a great deal about their side to be honest, but I will go out there and play against whoever," he added. "It doesn't really matter who plays for them, it is all about how we play."
