SIR Alan Ayckbourn is to perform the official opening ceremony of the new extension to Burnholme Community College in York On February 7.

The North Yorkshire playwright and director will be guest of honour at the opening of a new performing arts suite, part of a £1million refurbishment.

He will spend a day with students and will watch performances of dance, drama and music.

Deputy head Tony Gavin said: "We are thrilled that Sir Alan has agreed to join us for the evening ceremony and to work with some of the pupils during the day."

Work has been going on for about nine months on improvements to the school. It also includes new roofing, a new entrance foyer, a new technology block and upgraded science rooms.

Another opening ceremony for the food technology rooms is planned for Easter.

Mr Gavin said: "We would like to thank staff, parents and pupils, and the community education service, for bearing with us during this time"
