RECENT winters have been comparatively mild, and so a generation of children have grown up without seeing our rivers frozen over. This poses a real risk.
Adults are all too aware of the dangers, remembering heart-rending newspaper accounts of youngsters who went for a skate across the ice, only for them to be trapped underneath when it gave way.
Thankfully, most children have never been exposed to such tragedies. So we must instil into them a sense of the perils of iced-over rivers and lakes. Then they can enjoy this winter wonderland in safety.
