A LEVEL crossing gate had to be dragged from railway lines after a lorry smashed through it seconds before a train arrived.
Car driver Derrick Adamson, from Tang Hall, pulled the gate away after he saw the lorry hit it at the level crossing junction in Wigginton Road, York.
He said: "I don't know if there had been any danger, but I didn't have long to get it off the track before the train came along."
British Transport Police said the lorry driver had not noticed lights warning that the gate was coming down because of bright sunlight reflecting off them.
A spokesman said: "The gate had been broken off and had to be removed, but there was never any danger to any trains.
"The crossing was operating normally again shortly afterwards."
An investigation into the incident has started.
It happened at about 10am on Saturday.
