MEMORIES of life as York's first citizen have come flooding back for Councillor Derek Smallwood.
The Evening Press made him a special presentation of photographs taken throughout his term as the city's Lord Mayor.
He said it has brought back a wonderful time of his life. "I had some great times and it is terrific to have these pictures to keep those memories alive," he said. "I didn't see it as just my time, it was shared with a lot of people including the Evening Press and I had some great fun with the photographers and reporters."
Coun Smallwood's year in office came to an end in 1999.
"My best memory was granting the Freedom of the City to the Royal Dragoon Guards, because they've had such a strong association with the city and it was great to cement that," he said.
The pictures also hold poignant memories of Coun Smallwood's wife and Lady Mayoress, Marion, who died six months after their term of office ended.
He said: "I have some wonderful memories which I shared with her, and these pictures will help keep them fresh."
