Selby'S forward domination, set-piece efficiency and sure handling gave them a convincing 40-5 Yorkshire One victory at home to Pocklington.

Five of their tries came from close range rolling mauls - three of them from line-outs and two from tap penalties.

The game was one of only a handful which went ahead in Yorkshire and Pocklington had to make half a dozen late changes due to injuries and unavailability.

They were still getting organised on the pitch when Selby's number 8, Wright Phillips, scored their first try and set the tone of the game, winning the first six line-outs in a row before rolling over to touch down.

Although the try was unconverted, the Sandhill Lane side added a penalty through stand-off Nick Gregory and quickly added another try from second-rower Jason Cicero.

Selby's dominance continued unabated as open-side flanker Richard Nicholson, in his first home game of the season, touched down.

Not long after, fellow flanker Paul Randall also crossed in the opposite corner.

Pocklington got a glimmer of hope when Sam Allen weaved over in the centre for arguably the best try of the match after only arriving back in the country in midweek after a round the world trip.

The men from Percy Road needed a big start to the second half but they dropped the ball with the Selby line begging in the left corner and the home side took play to the other end where they moved out of sight with a John Hick try from another tap penalty move.

Pocklington created a handful of further chances but invariably dropped the ball at the vital moment while Selby's safe hands saw them seal victory with two more scores in the closing minutes.

The penultimate saw Selby score their only three-quarter try of the game, Tim Horner, at full-back, exchanging passes with his left-wing before running 30-yards to scoring his first try since joining the club.

Selby's final try was scored by last season's skipper Tom Bayston, the hooker claiming the spoils following another tap-penalty.
