FESTIVE residents in a York street have raised hundreds of pounds for St Leonard's Hospice - thanks to their dazzling Christmas lights.
Householders in Twin Pike Way, Wigginton, have adorned their properties in amazing illuminations which have attracted scores of visitors.
In a gesture of seasonal goodwill, neighbours got together and decided to place a collection box in the street to raise money for the hospice.
So far, nearly £300 has been raised.
The lights display includes illuminated Santas, toys, bells and snowmen.
Resident Joanne Davies, who lives with her husband, Brian, said the lights display had bonded the street together.
"There has been a wonderful spirit," she said.
"The hospice is very close to people's hearts in the city so it was the perfect choice.
"One of the nicest things was when an elderly gentleman visited the street and handed over some money to one of my neighbours, and said it was the best lights display he had ever seen.
"It makes it all worth while."
Resident Sarah Pulleyn said: "We all put our lights up every year, but this has been the best ever.
"Passing motorists stop and turn round to have a look at them all the time.
"It's nice that the hospice has been able to benefit."
The residents are planning a Christmas party to celebrate the success of the display.
St Leonard's Hospice fundraising manager Janet Morley said: "It's really wonderful.
"People have given very generously.
"Christmas is a special time and the lights will bring much joy.
"By giving to St Leonard's, people will be helping those whose Christmas will not be so happy this year.
"We're very grateful."
Patients and a family member are invited to join the hospice staff with a seasonal meal cooked up by the chefs at the hospice.
Day patients have been celebrating the festive season all week with special parties and entertainment.
