York defeated Lancaster in the annual Battle of the Roses chess clash.
The twice-postponed match, played over 11 boards, yielded a 7-4 York success. There were wins from Jon Griffith, Richard Palliser, Richard Hardy, Neville Pearce and Paul Brookes and draws from John Lafferty, Paul Hopwood, Herbert Lockwood and Richard Mounce.
Entries are still open for the popular Fulprint 15th York Congress at York University from January 4-6. There are four sections - Open, under-160, under-130 and under-100.
Prizes are £250 for scoring five points, £150 for 4 and £50 for
