BARMAID Vicky Flannery is celebrating after winning a new North of England pub 'pop idol' contest.

Vicky, 20, beat seven other wannabe pop stars in the Carling-sponsored competition based on the smash-hit TV programme.

Vicky - nominated for the Pubmaster contest by the Gipsy Moth, in Flaxley Road, Selby - put on a scintillating performance at the finals in Sunderland, winning a two-week holiday in Turkey.

Cheered on by a bus load of supporters from the Gipsy Moth, she caught the judge's eye and ear with a medley of songs comprising Hero, by Mariah Carey; Get Here, by Oleta Adams, and The Real Thing by Lisa Stansfield.

Dressed in a chic red shirt and tie, black trousers and stiletto boots, Vicky was given top marks for performance, personality, voice and presentation.

Vicky, of Powell Street, Selby, is a barmaid at Selby's Golden Lion and a regular karaoke singer at the Gipsy Moth.

She said: "I'd love to become a professional singer, but if I don't make it then I'm happy singing in pubs."

Gipsy Moth landlady Bev McCarthy said: "Vicky is a smashing singer with a strong voice and bags of talent. If she puts her mind to it, she could go a long way."
