A CHILL ran through me as I read about 'The classroom of the future' (December 10), in which the teacher instructing the class may be substantially replaced by computer screens imparting 'literacy and numeracy'.

Since we rejected child-centred learning, we have been slowly dehumanising education, which is not just about skills (necessary, yes) but also about values, relationships, even inspiration.

Our present one-sided version (or lack of it) leaves out care, creativity, growth in relationship and concern for the environment. Real education is about fellowship, personal and global. Computer screens don't teach this.

Legal and logical minds are manipulating schools in one direction only. We can see the results in widespread emotional immaturity. Hence the growth of violence; the litter in our streets and countryside; and in politics, the lack of imagination as to how to make the world a better place.

We are aiming at efficiency without a heart.
