RECORD-BREAKING goal-kicking ace Jamie Benn is set for a return to Huntington Stadium.

The Evening Press revealed back in October that York Wasps were not ruling out a move for the full-back, and he signed on the dotted line yesterday after the Wasps' 22-18 defeat by Batley.

The 24-year-old, who has already had two spells at Huntington Stadium, joined Wasps' Northern Ford Premiership rivals Featherstone late in the summer but was released from his contract after just six weeks at the club.

Rovers coach Peter Roe had then said that Benn, a capture from near neighbours Castleford Tigers, had been unable to train regularly with the club due to "other commitments", but chief executive Ann Garvey today said that had all been sorted out.

"We've been looking at Jamie Benn for some months and we're delighted he's now signed," said Garvey.

"He's had a few personal problems that he had to attend to but he's got those resolved now."

Benn has recently been playing for amateur outfit Cas Panthers - his first game back at that club was a 26-18 National Conference League win over Heworth last month in which he scored a try - and has earned rave reviews in his last few games.

Confirmation of his signing came through today, though he will not be available for the Wasps' next match, away to Hunslet on Boxing Day.

"He is going to bring a lot of experience, together with the likes of Peter Edwards, Mark Cain and Carl Hall, and he has an excellent kicking game," said Garvey.

Benn holds the Wasps' record of goals and points in a match - 13 and 30, respectively, against Oldham in August, 1999 - and later earned a call-up to the Scotland squad.

He had made his debut for the club the previous season, and went on to join Keighley and latterly onto Castleford Tigers. He returned to Huntington Stadium for the start of last season but quit the club for the Tigers' Alliance team early in the campaign after the Wasps entered into the company voluntary agreement.
