The message for Selby from their 28-17 club match defeat at Hemsworth was that they will have to pull their socks up.

Hemsworth were enthusiastic and energetic but lacked organisation and discipline.

Selby never exerted enough control over the game to prevent the opposition from burgling the ball at breakdown.

With drizzle throughout the game excitement was limited to the occasional passing express train.

Selby were the better side and their early play brought a penalty for Ray Adamson, but sloppy handling and slack play allowed the Hemsworth full back to kick ahead for his winger to score at the flag.

Selby responded immediately and Adamson completed a sweeping move to score wide out. Then to emphasise their superiority a forward drive from a lineout saw John Hick claim the score.

Instead of building on this score the visitors sat back and allowed Hemsorth to advance to their 22, make the Selby forwards commit and then create an overlap for their stand-off to reduce the arrears.

Hooker Tom Bayston then crossed the line as his forwards carried him over in another controlled forward drive to close the first half.

From the kick off Selby's forwards put pressured on the opposition and Hick charged down a kick, collected and dived over.

Selby's discipline, a major problem this season, then deserted them once more and this allowed Hemsworth to run at them.

A harmless looking chip ahead which looked to be covered bounced favourably for the home side off half to claim a simple try which he converted.

The remaining quarter was at last controlled by Selby and the forwards drove back the Hemsorth scrum and their scrappy ball was controlled by Nicholson, making a welcome return after a long lay-off, to complete the scoring.
