SNOOKER star Ronnie O' Sullivan romped to a record win to cap an excellent two weeks on the green baize in York.

His 10-1 victory over Irishman Ken Doherty rounded off the world's second largest snooker tournament which put York firmly back on the map.

Around 10,000 tickets have been sold for the event, with fans travelling from all over the country to watch the stars in action at the Barbican.

"I have spoken to people from Devon and Scotland," said Leon Shouksmith, Barbican snooker co-ordinator.

"It has been an unprecedented success with very positive feedback from officials, players and spectators.

"Dates are pencilled in for the event next year and champ Ronnie O'Sullivan told me it was "an A1" venue."

The record-breaking Irishman believes York to be among the top four venues in the world.

Players have had a great time both at the Barbican and in the city itself, with a number of restaurants and pubs benefiting from visits by some of the household names staying here.

The town is buzzing with stories of having a curry on the table next to Dennis Taylor, buying a sandwich alongside Ronnie O' Sullivan or bumping into Willie Thorne in the street.

"It has been excellent for York - more visitors, more coverage and something to get the city going again. I am already looking forward to next year's tournament," added Mr Shouksmith.
