WHILE welcoming the police's intention to crackdown on cyclists who ride without lights in the dark ('No-lights cyclists face crackdown', December 12 ) will the police also clampdown on drivers who insist on illegally driving with fog lights in conditions of clear visibility?

I doubt it.

...Thank goodness something will be done about these cyclists. It terrifies me when they race past me on the inside without lights.

It is impossible to see them yet I know that I will be in serious trouble should I hit one with my car.

Only this evening I was passed by three cyclists without lights who were weaving in and out of traffic.

Their cycles should be confiscated on the spot and not returned until the fine is paid.

...I always welcome news that the police are taking steps to enforce the law. But I wonder if it would be possible to use cameras to help trap cyclists in the act of committing the offence of riding at night without lights?

It would only be fair though, in the light of the recently-issued guidelines on speed cameras, that any cameras should be brightly painted and conspicuously positioned so that errant cyclists will know where they are likely to get caught.

And, also, that they should only be allowed to be installed where there is a proven record of crashes caused by cyclists riding without lights..
