Victoria Graves recorded the first-ever win for Archbishop Holgate's in the Year Seven race at the York Schools Cross-Country Championships - after coming unstuck.
Graves lost her shoe in the mud soon after the start of the race on Knavesmire, but showed great determination in her first-ever race to continue and lead her school to their highest team placing of third.
She was followed by promising newcomers Joanna Mason (Mount) and Vicki Needham (Canon Lee).
St Olave's strength in depth enabled them to win the team award with Canon Lee gaining second place.
Archbishop's - and indeed the Graves family - landed a great double when Victoria's brother, Philip, won the Junior Boys event.
Lara Gibbs of St Peter's School was a convincing winner of the intermediate race.
The Junior girls finished the busy day with the two strongest runners quickly opening up a big lead over the rest of the big field.
In mid-race Emma Macalister-Hall (St Olave's) produced an amazing change of pace to gain a convincing lead, with Tadcaster's Nicola Lampard in second spot.
Lampard had had an excellent run on a tough course in the English Schools Cup Final only three days earlier.
Tadcaster also gained third, fourth and fifth places and so became convincing team winners. Tadcaster's score of 26 points for five runners would have beaten a combined team from all other schools.
The first 20 runners in each race have been invited to represent the area on January 12 and 19. Any runner who missed the trials but would like to take part in future races should contact their PE teacher or ring 01937 581165 for further information.
A total of 280 girls took part in the races.
