THE estimated 10,000 carers in York have been urged to check they are getting all the help that is on offer.
The city's MP, Hugh Bayley, has called on residents to take advantage of benefit changes which give councils more power to provide services or payments for carers.
A survey by charity Carers UK shows fewer than 60 per cent of people who are entitled to disability allowance actually claim it.
The revelations were made as the country marked Carer's Rights Day today. Mr Bayley said: "Carers save the country a fortune every year and are entitled to support.
"Sadly, there is evidence that many carers are not aware of their rights and do not claim the benefits and services that are available. Carer's Rights Day is a welcome initiative which will help increase carers' awareness of the help they can get."
The Carers and Disabled Children's Act 2000 introduced changes to benefits, including more direct help with housework, gardening and travelling.
More information about the help available can be gained by calling the Carers UK Hotline on 0207 5667610.
