Despite the eloquence of Coun Merrett and his chums I don't think the general public like having the wool pulled over their eyes regarding Coppergate II (Coppergate II will help preserve city centre, December 6) .
York City Centre thrives now - as it did in the past, as does the likes of Harrogate now - on its individuality, not by being a mini Leeds, nor by housing vast arcades of large multiples duplicated in featureless cities and out-of-town estates.
Money is the key to this planning madness. We have not been made aware of the financial benefits compared to the potential loss of cultural heritage, nor to where they are directed. There has to be a better way for York.

...Coun Merrett's letter points out 'what City of York Council want' and 'what central Government want'. The people of York are who count! Never mind what you want. Ignore those who elect you at your peril, sir.
