TOTAL income from farming (TIFF) in 2001 in the UK is forecast to rise by 17pc (a 15pc rise in real terms), according to the Department of Energy, Food and Rural Affairs. TIFF per whole time person equivalent is forecast to have risen in real terms to £8,267.
Although above last year's level, TIFF in real terms is forecast to be 71pc below its recent peak in 1995 (after more than doubling between 1990 and 1995, largely due to changes the exchange rate).
Compensation payments for animals culled due to foot and mouth disease, including payments through the welfare scheme, do not count towards income. "This is only one measure of the strength of the farming industry," said the Minister for Food and Farming Lord Whitty. "However, I am encouraged that there has been a sufficient level of recovery for some sectors to lead to this rise overall."
