Selby Town have moved back to the top of the Northern Counties East premier division after a hard fought 1-0 win over Garforth Town at Flaxley Road.

Selby started brightly and took the lead after just six minutes when a Andy Hart free-kick was headed in at the far post by Alan Jackson, who was making his home debut after recently signing from local club Riccall United.

The Robins swept forward in the opening 20 minutes and created several chances against a ponderous-looking Garforth defence with Dexter Tucker and Hart going close.

The visitors gradually clawed their way back into the game and had the ball in the net after 25 minutes but it was ruled out for offside, while on-loan York City 'keeper John Collinson had to make great save just before the break.

In the second half, Garforth continued to push forward and hit the bar after a goal-mouth scramble.

The Selby defence had to work hard but the Robins still created enough chances to seal the game and in the last minute Nigel Oldfield hit the post after a good move.

Pickering Town are breathing down the neck of Selby following their 2-1 victory over close rivals Harrogate Railway.

Jimmy Reid's men are now in third and trail Selby by three points, but with five games in hand they will have plenty of chances to overtake the Robins.

Two goals in a five-minute spell from Phil O'Reily saw the Pikes on their way on Saturday, although it was Kevin Smith who had opened the scoring for Railway just after half-time.

"It was a typical, competitive derby match - it was hard, ferocious with no questions asked," said Reid.

"I'm sure Marsh (Paul Marshall, the Railway boss) will say his side were unlucky, but I felt we just shaded it.

"It is a great three points for us though and it has been a great week for us.

"We've now picked up nine points in seven days and things are bubbling nicely for the FA Vase on Saturday."

With Goole beating Armthorpe Welfare 3-0, thanks to goals from Andy Saville, Matt Edeson and Neil Harrison, Rail have now dropped to 17th in the standings.

Tadcaster Albion completed a sensational hat-trick of victories over Rossington Main with a 2-1 win in their division one clash.

Wayne Day's men had already seen off their Doncaster-based rivals in the divisional cup and in the league last week.

But on Saturday, Taddy picked up win number three, although it was Main who took the lead through Ian Black.

Taddy bounced back though with strikes from Steve Batley and leading scorer Kevin Duckworth to take the points.

Nestl Rowntree are the new leaders of the West Yorkshire League premier division after a 4-2 victory over Mount St Marys.

With Carlton, who started the day in pole position, tied up in the West Riding County Cup, Nestl took full advantage to replace them.

Steve Ward and Luke Bilham put Nestl 2-0 up before Mount scored goals either side of the break to level matters.

This seemed to wake Trees up, with Brent Terry and Ward pouncing for goals to see off the Mount resistance.

With ten minutes to go Martin Cowl was red-carded after a controversial handball decision.

"The sending off was a terrible decision, but we have just got to accept it," said assistant-boss JonReynolds.

"We worked very hard for three very valuable points.

"We've played two games more than Carlton, but it is nice to be on top of the league, especially after our start to the season."

Harrogate Town's FA Trophy clash with Kendal was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and has been rearranged for tomorrow (kick-off 7.45pm).

This now means Town's West Riding Cup clash with Harrogate Railway - the first meeting between the neighbours for eight years - has now been put back a week.
